How much does ridge and verge repointing cost in Andover?
The price covers lifting loose caps, raking out the perished mortar, fresh sand and cement bedding and a clean pointed finish, plus clearing the gutters and valleys. What changes it is the length of ridge and verge involved and how the roof is reached.
Carried out along the run
- Lifting unstable ridge and hip tiles
- Chipping out broken, crumbly old mortar
- Mixing fresh sand and cement with bonding additives
- Rebedding loose tiles firmly to the ridge line
- Pointing verge tile edges to a clean, weather tight finish
- Clearing dislodged mortar fragments from valleys and gutters
- A roof inspection first is an option if you want the joints checked before committing to any work.
- Rotten rafters, valley board replacement, dry verge capping and full retiling are separate jobs, priced on their own.
- Where scaffolding is needed rather than ladders, the price reflects that.

What happens on the day
The visit starts with a close look at the ridge and verge joints before any old mortar is touched.
- Checking the joints firstWe inspect the ridge line and gable verges from ladders or scaffolding, noting loose tiles, missing mortar sections and slipped undercloak boards.
- Preparing the work areaPlease keep the ground directly below the roof edge clear of vehicles, potted plants and garden furniture so waste mortar can be removed safely.
- Raking out and rebeddingPerished mortar is chopped back without striking the sound tiles beside it, then fresh sand and cement with bonding additives is bedded under each cap and the joints struck off to shed rainwater.
- Clearing up and talking it throughMortar fragments are cleared out of the valleys and gutters, then we show you the finished joints and explain anything worth watching on the slopes either side.

Questions about ridge and verge repointing
Can ridge tiles be repointed without lifting them?
Not properly. Pointing over mortar that has lost its bond fails fast, so where a cap has lifted we raise it, rake out the degraded base and reset it on a fresh bed.
What makes verge mortar crack and fall out?
The verge takes the direct force of wind and rain on the gable end of the house. Natural roof movement, thermal expansion and repeated freeze thaw cycles crack older mortar until it drops away.
Does ridge and verge repointing include clearing the gutters?
Yes. The mortar fragments that get raked out, including any that have already rolled into the valleys and gutters, are removed as part of the job so rainwater outlets stay clear.
What does repointing not cover?
It does not cover replacing rotten rafters or valley boards, fitting a continuous dry verge capping system or retiling the main roof slopes. If any of that is needed we will tell you once we have looked.
Will repointing stop water getting under the ridge?
Yes. Fresh bedding under each cap and a struck, weather tight joint closes the gaps that let driving rain reach the underfelt and the roof timbers.
