What the repointing price covers
The price covers the inspection of the joints, cutting out the failed mortar, fresh sand and cement bedding and a clean struck finish along the ridge and verge. What changes it is how much mortar has failed, the length of ridge and verge involved and the access the roof needs.
Carried out along the run
- Lifting unstable ridge and hip tiles
- Chipping out broken, crumbly old mortar
- Mixing fresh sand and cement with bonding additives
- Rebedding loose tiles firmly to the ridge line
- Pointing verge tile edges to a clean, weather tight finish
- Clearing dislodged mortar fragments from valleys and gutters
- A short ridge with surface gaps costs less to renew than a full run of loose caps that all need lifting.
- Roofs that need scaffolding rather than ladder access change the figure.
- Rotten rafters, dry verge capping systems and replacement of the main covering are separate work priced on their own.
Ridge and verge repointing across Newbury
We serve Newbury from our base in Thatcham.
What happens on the day
The work follows a set order: the joints are checked, the ground below is cleared and the old mortar comes out before any new bedding goes on.
- Checking the jointsWe inspect the ridge line and gable verges from ladders or scaffolding, looking for loose caps, missing mortar sections and slipped undercloak boards along the roof edge.
- Keeping the ground clearVehicles, pots and garden furniture should be moved away from below the roof edge before work starts, so broken mortar can come down and be cleared away safely.
- Cutting out the old beddingFailed mortar is chopped back without striking or cracking the sound tiles beside it, then fresh sand and cement is mixed with bonding additives for the new bed.
- Rebedding and pointingEach cap is set back onto the ridge line and the verge edges are pointed to a smooth finish, struck off so rainwater runs away from the joint.

Ridge and verge repointing questions
What makes verge mortar crack and fall out?
A gable end takes the brunt of wind and rain, and the mortar there ages fastest. Natural roof movement, heat expansion and repeated freeze thaw cycles crack older mixes until pieces drop away from the verge.
Can you repoint ridge tiles without taking them off?
Surface pointing over a loose bed fails quickly, because the tile is no longer bonded underneath. Where a cap has lost its bed we lift it, rake out the degraded cement and reset it on fresh mortar.
Will repointing fix a leak at the top of the roof?
Open joints at the ridge or verge let driving rain reach the underfelt and timbers, so renewing the mortar is a fix for that kind of leak. The inspection shows where the water is actually getting in before any work starts.
Do you fit dry verge systems?
Our verge work is mortar repointing, not mechanical dry verge capping. If a dry verge system would suit the roof better we explain the difference so you can weigh it up.
What happens to the old mortar you remove?
Broken cement is chopped out in sections and comes down into the cleared area below the roof edge. Dislodged fragments are also cleared out of valleys and gutters so rainwater outlets stay open.
